Stalking Jack the Ripper Review: Bloody Loved This

I really like punny titles. I probably spend more time and effort coming up with a quirky title than I do reviews sometimes. They’re just so fun!

Anyways, on to my review…

I’m not a big murder mystery reader, so I didn’t think a book about a mystery of serial killer would be something for me. BUT I was convinced to read this book due to the Fiction Boyfriend post Jessica @Those Infernal books wrote on Thomas. After I read it I was sold on the book, and I’m reevaluating my stance on murder mysteries. It might be shallow that I’m read the book because of a boy, but I’m that kind of girl, and I’ll try not to be ashamed of it.

The entire time I read this book I heard the music from Sherlock playing. Did anyone else? It made it better and I think you should watch Sherlock and then read this book because they are very similar which is probably why I like it so much.

Audrey Rose and Thomas are brilliant, but they don’t make me feel dumb as they solve crazy hard puzzles. Their duo reminded me of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, Audrey’s last name is even Wadsworth! Come on! They worked well together even though they had this romantic tension and competitiveness in between them.

One reason I don’t read a lot of mystery is because I don’t like feeling lost until the very end. I want to at least feel like I know what’s going on even if at the end there’s a huge twist. As Audrey puts together different pieces of the mystery I was clued in to what was going on.

Certain chapters had an illustration or picture of something to do with dissecting, disease, or just general gore. It was gross (I’m very squeamish) but also useful because I have no knowledge or experience with a lot of stuff in the book so it helped me imagine and understand better.

The way the book is written coincides with the time period and location, both for some reason I missed while putting the setting together in my head. For the first chapter or so I was like, “why are they talking like that? Why are they taking a carriage?” Once I figured all that out it made way more sense, also if you read the book with all the characters having British accents it makes it better. I recommend doing it if you are a goof like me.

Audrey and Thomas’s banter was wonderful and very funny. They make a good team even if Thomas infuriates Audrey.

I did fall in love with Thomas! He was such a fresh character. He’s very clever and wicked smart and I really enjoyed that about him. Thomas is very supportive of Audrey which is really cool in that time period since women weren’t “supposed” to do much other than taking care of the household. He’s also hilarious.

“I don’t blame you, I am rather attractive. The tall, dark hero of your dreams, swooping in to save you with my vast intellect. You should accept my hand at once.”

This book was intriguing and the pacing kept me interested. I also couldn’t tell how the story would end which made me very happy as a reader. A great read with some great characters!
