Did you see the sweet cover? STUNNING. I saw a tweet of the second book, and its cover is beautiful as well. I looked into the series and found the first book, and man am I glad I did!
I love the concept of this book, the idea of this new form of mind control and then being freed from it and having to experience life in its entirety is fascinating to me. (that was a really long sentence. I feel like I need to take a breather just from writing that).
Honestly, the world and society were the most interesting part to me. My imagination drew inspiration from Oliver Twist and the slums, but also some odd inspiration from Suckerpunch the movie? The steampunkness of the world as well as the kick a** girls.
“Voices droned like auto engines, smiles were exchanges like cash. The air was thick with anticipation, the fumes of celebratory cigarettes and home-cooked meals.”
Doesn’t that quote make you want to be there? You don’t even know where there is but I intrigued you with that quote didn’t I? You’ll have to read to find out!
There are a lot of musical elements within the book, and me being a terrible singer and illiterate when it comes to music notes, I did not feel left out with the musical references. It made me like music more, still don’t know how to read music, so it’s a good thing books use words huh?
I don’t want to say too much about any characters because I want you to experience them on your own in their entirety. I will say that I really enjoyed all the diverse characters and how they interacted with the society and world.
I really can’t say enough about the concept of this book. I love it and I think it’s very fresh and I love that about it.
What do you think, future TBR? Already read it? Let me know your thoughts in the comments!
