Love & Monsters: A Perfect End of the World Story

You need to watch this movie ASAP.

I’ll admit I found this movie because my friends and I were talking about Dylan O’Brien and how much we enjoy him in Teen Wolf. When I saw that he had a movie coming out in October I mentally stashed the date away and bided my time. When I realized that it was FINALLY time for the movie to come out, I convinced my roommates to give it a try.

It was so GREAT. I have absolutely nothing bad to say about it. There was nothing I didn’t like about the movie–which is totally against my moving watching nature. O’Brien was fabulous (of course) as a goofy, cute, and relatable protagonist. Also his dog, Boy was adorable.

Joel, the main character, was such a relatable person at the end of the world looking for love and attempting to be brave when everything seems to be trying to kill you. He wasn’t this Tom Cruise character who is amazing at surviving. He’s just a regular guy trying to make it at the end of the world. I think O’Brien was the perfect cast for the movie because he was able to make Joel’s optimism and humor come to life in a way that made him instantly lovable. The movie reminded my friends and I why we love O’Brien so much.

I loved the concept of this movie a lot. All of the “monsters” used to be normal cold blooded animals and insects. So, they were super realistically mutated. It was cool to recognize animals and how they could be turned into monsters if they were giant and could eat humans. It was also interesting to see how the world changed as these once small creatures have to adapt to being huge. The places they filmed were also beautiful. It was so green and overgrown. It was like a prettier version of Walking Dead (I feel like everything in Walking Dead is like beige).

A boy and his dog on an adventure always strikes such a cord with me and this was no exception. Joel and Boy’s connection was PERFECTION. I also think that going on a deadly for journey for love is so romantic. I don’t want to give away any spoilers, so I won’t say anymore on that. The quality of the movie was great. The CGI work was great and the different angles used to shoot were super interesting. I’ll stop being a movie nerd and continue with the post.

Honestly I could go on and on about this movie. I wish it were a book because I want to experience it as a written story as well. It was so visually engaging though so it’s probably best as a movie. I just LOVED the writing so much which I feel is rare for an action movie.

You can rent this movie for $20 and I HIGHLY recommend doing it. Maybe see if you can split it with a significant other or roommates, but you gotta watch this movie.

  1. This movie came out of nowhere but I’m so glad it did because I adore Dylan O’Brien. He’s such a charismatic, talented actor and I’d love to see him in more films (especially following his accident). I heard this one was a great time and that O’Brien and his dog basically make the movie haha. I’m glad you enjoyed it! I think I know where my next $20 will go. Also, yes, everything in TWD is kinda beige LOL
